On/Off-Grid CyboInverter Q&A

Since its introduction, the On/Off-Grid CyboInverters have received a lot of interest and inquiries. This section discusses some of the practical matters for designing and installing an on/off-grid solar power system. Please also download the following articles and On/Off-Grid Solar Power System Design Guide for more info.

No. Question Answer
1 How do I design an on/off-grid solar power system in general? Is it dependent on the AC standards and AC loads? Yes. It depends on the AC standard of the electric grid for the on-grid mode and the AC loads for the off-grid mode.

Due to the complexity and requirement variations, CyboEnergy has published an On/Off-Grid Solar Power System Design Guide, which can be downloaded after filling out a short form here.

2 Does the On/Off-Grid CyboInverter contain a battery charger or do we need an external one? You can use a solar charge controller or simply an AC battery charger to do this job. We have a CyboCharger to charge 36V batteries. We do not want to include a battery charger in CyboInverters to keep the products simpler.
3 In an On/Off-Grid system configuration, will both the On-Grid and Off-Grid AC outputs be active at the same time? No. An On/Off-Grid CyboInverter will either run in on-grid or off-grid mode, never at the same time. When the grid is on, it will be switched to the on-grid mode, sending generated AC power to the grid. When the grid is down, it will go to the off-grid mode automatically powering AC loads. Of course, you can disconnect the on-grid AC line to "force" the inverter to switch to the off-grid mode.
4 For a solar project, we have calculated that we will need at least 20 x 250W PV panels for a 5KW to 6KW on/off-grid system with a total of 5 CyboInverters. The available input channels will be 20. How can I accomodate and where can I connect the batteries? If you use 300W - 320W solar panels instead, then you just need 16 solar panels to obtain 5KW DC. This configuration will leave 4 input channels open for batteries in a 5-CyboInverter configuration-- 3 on-grid CyboInverters and an On/Off Grid twin pack (2 inverters). In fact, you can use one 36V battery for all 4 input channels.

If you want to run the off-grid mode frequently, you can use 2 x 36V batteries, each connects to 2 input channels.

There are similar configurations on the On/Off-Grid Solar Power System Design Guide on Page 18 and 19.

Please note that this system is designed for backup power and should run only critical loads. It may not support your whole house's electrical needs at one time.
5 We plan to install the CyboInverters on the roof. Then, how do I connect the On/Off-Grid CyboInverters to the batteries located in the garage? You can install the On-Grid CyboInverters on the roof, and install the On/Off Grid CyboInverters (A/N twin pack) in the garage. All the inverters are daisy-chained through the AC wires and Wieland connectors. Then, just run 4 pairs of DC wires up to the roof to connect to 4 solar panels using an 8-conductor wire. This way, the batteries and On/Off Grid CyboInverters can be kept in close proximity.

Accessory products like the CyboWire and battery cables can be purchased to help make installation easier.
